Watch TV Online

Is it possible to watch cable or satellite television stations online?

I joined the Air Force in March and have finally arrived to my technical training in the Presidio of Monterey in California. I am planning to buy a laptop computer with wireless internet in the near future and I was wondering if there was a program or service online that allows you to watch cable or satellite television stations (such as TBS, Fox News Channel, and Comedy Central, just to name a few) online, without having to buy cable. I can't get cable in my dorm and I am looking for a completely legal, paid service to watch these channels on my computer. I want a service or program that I have to pay for, just like I would if I was getting regular cable or satellite.

1. well if u buy a laptop with a tv tuner built in, then yes it is possible to watch the broadcast things like nbc,abc,etc....but even if ur laptop has the ability to watch television. cable tv and satelite are paid services. u cant watch cable tv or satelite without paying for it. there are some programs that offer some cable and satelite channels for free but nothing in the way of movies or what not. more like teasers like the weather channel or something. but to get something like hbo or whatever you'ld have to pay for it.
2. You could by previous episodes on iTunes or on a DVD and put them into your computer. Also go to Youtube to see if you can watch some shows (also after they were brodcasted on TV), but something that you can put on you computer and watch like on a television? I don't think anything like that exists yet. Then again I could be wrong.
3. check out www.slingbox.com , purchase this and get a cable /satellite feed (independant line) to your parents , best friends, etc house. you can then control that "cable box" via your laptop. if you do a slingbox inquiry in y! answers, you'll see others are using it too
